The SCG Thailand Open Badminton Championship heads for a grandstand final today, with an intriguing tie between local star Boonsak Ponsana and world No 1 Lin Dan of China topping the glittering final fixtures.
The second seed Boonsak was the sole home player to make it through to the finals in the men's singles yesterday after securing a 21-17 21-18 straight sets victory over Hong Kong's Yan Kit Chan within 35 minutes. In the doubles, Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam and Songphon Anugritayawon and Tesana Panvisvas, failed to follow suit in the mixed and men's doubles respectively. Boonsak defeated Lin in the Singapore Open Super Series last year and is hoping he can reproduce that form to claim his second triumph on home soil after his 2004 victory. In the mixed doubles, the top seeds Han Bin He and Yang Yu of China knocked Sudket and Saralee out of the tournament in the semi-finals for the second year running following a comfortable 21-14 21-18 victory. The world No 3 pair maintain a perfect record against this opposition. In the second set the Chinese went on a remarkable 7-0 run to seal the win, after trailing 14-18.
