Boonsak Ponsana is firmly on course for his second home success, having cruised into the semi-finals of the SCG Thailand Open Badminton Championship.
The second seed, who won the tournament four years ago, needed just over half an hour to overcome compatriot Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk in straight sets 21-13 21-13 in the quarter-finals of the men's singles. In an all-Thai affair, the 26-year-old Boonsak, tournament's runner-up last year, managed to turn what many expected as a close duel into a lopsided win. Boonsak will come up against Hong Kong's seventh seed Yan Kit Chan, who disposed of Yuichi Ikeda of Japan in a three-set thriller, in the last four. A good combination between Salaree Thoung-thongkam's solid defensive display and Sudket Prapakamol's ruthless attack saw the duo cruise to a convincing 21-14 21-17 victory over Suzanne Rayppan and David Lindley of England in the mixed doubles. The third seed pair are due to encounter the world No 3 duo, Hanbin He and Yang Yu of China in a rematch of last year's semi-final, in which the Thais lost out in a close duel. In the women's singles Porntip Buranaprasertsuk, the lone local survivor, went down to Aiying Xing of Singapore 21-18 21-19. However, Songphon Anugritayawon and Tesana Panvisvas gladdened hearts by taming the Danish pair of Anders Kristiansen and Simon Mollyhus 21-16 21-19.
