"Of the 2,009 responses, 66.85 per cent say no to the proposed criteria," director of National Institute of Educational Testing Service (NIETS), Utumporn Jamorn-mann said yesterday.

The poll, conducted by the NIETS from February 19 to March 21, asked for responses about the removal of the second foreign-language test and replace it with a Professional Aptitude Test. This criteria is expected to go into effect in 2010. According to the poll, many respondents said that removing the language test would give science students an advantage over those studying languages.

Some also said that the new criteria looked far too complicated.

Utumporn said the Univers-ity Presidents Council of Thailand (UPCT) would be informed of the poll's findings.

UPCT chairman Dr Monthol Sa-nguansermsri said the findings would be taken into account while deciding on the new university admission criteria. "We may reconsider the removal of the language tests."

However, he added the poll only reflected the opinions of a limited group of people.

"All decisions we make will be in the children's best interest," Monthol said, adding that UPCT hopes to give more weight to students' academic performance.
